Knack Tutor

Knack | Jan 2024 - Present

An Overview:

As a tutor for Knack, I have developed many valuable skills, including professionalism in the workplace, motivational techniques, tutoring ethics, and effective communication, by completing various trainings. I have learned to tutor both in person and virtually. I typically tutor students in Physics, Calculus, Differential Equations, and Cornerstone of Engineering.

Why I Tutor:

  • In my collegiate career, I have benefited a lot from the assistance provided by peer tutors. They help me understand tough topics and problems by breaking them down into manageable pieces. Because they have recently been students in the same course and often had the same professor, they can give valuable advice from their own experience!

  • Once I had gained enough knowledge in certain subjects, I decided that a great way to give back to my community was to offer some of my time to help tutor other students

  • I enjoy math and physics, but as I no longer have room for such classes in my curriculum, a great way to stay involved with them is by tutoring other students.

  • Though tutoring is often seen as a one-way street (tutee receives from tutor), I have found that it is actually a two-way street! Each student is unique, depending on their background, experience, and methods of learning. Therefore, in the process of tutoring, I am learning how to communicate more efficiently and to tailor my methods towards each tutee’s strengths and goals.

The Tutoring Process:

  • Typically, a tutoring session will be 1 to 1.5 hours long. Some students will come back weekly.

  • During this session, we might complete various tasks, including the following:

    • review graded homework or exams

    • prepare for an upcoming exam

    • clear up confusions

    • provide and solve practice problems

    • review key concepts

  • I try to make my sessions fun and interactive, generally using a whiteboard.

  • And if there is something I'm not 100% sure about, I'll write up some notes after the session, so that I do not leave a student unaided. Then, I send the student a copy via e-mail, asking them to let me know if they have any further questions.
